Manufactured consent: debunking media war on Venezuela
Tue March 19, 2019
Toronto, Canada – Common Frontiers is hosting an Ontario tour with independent journalist Dimitri Lascaris, who was in Venezuela in early February reporting for The Real News Network.
Dimitri will be speaking about what he witnessed in Venezuela and share compelling video footage and testimony about the challenges faced by ordinary Venezuelans. His reports provide nuance and details which are absent from most of the mainstream media and often contradicts what has been reported about Venezuela. While in Caracas, Dimitri spoke to Venezuelans of different political stripes, and attended public events with both opposition groups and supporters to get as accurate view of the situation.
Most media coverage of the US-backed coup attempt in Venezuela has shown an appalling lack of impartiality, balance and fairness. Private corporate media and even public broadcasters like the CBC have consistently ignored voices demanding a peaceful solution to the crisis in Venezuela or international organizations, like the UN and CARICOM, that oppose foreign interference, while favouring Venezuelan opposition and US government spokespeople, who favour regime change. As a result, the public is subjected to widespread misinformation that serves as a tool for manufacturing consent for the US regime-change agenda.
“On February 23, the corporate media widely reported that Venezuelan forces had set fire to ‘humanitarian aid’ at the Colombian border. Western leaders, including two Ministers
Of Canada’s government, repeated the claim although it was immediately debunked by independent journalists. Weeks later, the New York Times confirmed that the claim was
False but even then, Western leaders did not retract this false accusation.” – Dimitri Lascaris
Hugo Chavez and Chavismo upset the power dynamic in Venezuela. The powerful countries and mainstream media have been complicit in efforts to manipulate how the world sees Chavismo and the Bolivarian government – Maya Bhullar, rabble.ca
